The Center for Academic Writing of Tyumen State University is opening
The Center for Academic Writing is preparing for its opening. It has launched the program “Tutor training for academic writing centers” for 17 EFL teachers of Tyumen State University. The program was supported by the English Language Office of the USA Embassy in Moscow and included a series of workshops that took place on April 11-13, 2016. The trainers were Eve Smith, ESL specialist, Georgia State University, USA, and Ekaterina Maltseva, EFL teacher of Samara State Aerospace University.During the program, the participants examined the stages of conducting consultations, workshops, and seminars; studied the peculiarities of working with different audiences (students, post-graduates, and researchers) on scientific communication; learnt about the experience of managing the work of Samara Academic Consultancy Center. The teachers also identified special features of APA and other citation styles, developed their skills of defining, writing and editing a thesis statement, reviewed each other’s grant proposals, which were given by Eve as pre-training tasks.
The team of tutors consists of experienced and motivated teachers who can face the challenges of organizing the work of the Center efficiently. The main activity of the Center is giving consultations to the University post-graduates and researchers who are planning to get published in English.
The Center is going to provide a full range of services for the University in the autumn. The Director of the Center is Valeria Evdash, British Council trainer; the Deputy Director is Nadezhda Zhuravleva.
