The National Association of Teachers of English(NATE) as a Spark for Continuing Professional Development

The National Association of Teachers of English (NATE) Conference was held at Russian State Social University, Moscow, from May 29th to June 3rd.

Valeria Evdash, Nadezhda Zhuravleva and Irina Belyakova represented the Center for Academic Writing “Impulse” and Tyumen English Language Teachers’ Association (TumELTA) at the Conference. They also participated in Pre-conference events that included academic writing workshops conducted by Robert Coté, the Director of the Writing Skills Improvement Program at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Robert shared a number of ideas ranging from basics of academic writing to running writing centers. His workshops gave a fresh insight into academic communication. Robert Coté plans to collaborate with our Center and the Russian Writing Centers Consortium.

The Conference days were saturated with bright ideas and inspiring talks. Irina gave a presentation on guided writing, and Nadezhda showed one of the workshops for Tyumen State University researchers as a model for workshop design. Valeria took part in the panel discussion along with her Russian colleagues sharing her impressions about TESOL Convention in Seattle, USA, that she attended this year. Overall, the participants had a chance to attend a variety of other workshops and presentations devoted to current issues in EFL teaching.

The Conference Committee brought international best practices into the traditional annual NATE Conference that was held with great success. Perfect organization of interest sections, careful selection of Russian and International presenters and welcoming atmosphere made this Conference a truly unforgettable event.

The Conference demonstrated that Russian teachers’ community faces many challenges but remains united.
