English Language Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow Paid a Brief Visit to Tyumen

Jerrold Frank, English Language Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, visited Tyumen State University and the Center for Academic Writing on June 16th, 2017. The English Language Office (ELO) has been supporting Academic Writing Centers all over Russia, and Jerrold was pleased to see that CAWI has been running very successfully. Jerrold discussed the main mission of CAWI and its achievements with the Center staff.
Jerrold and his colleague, Chrystal Bock Thiessen, ESL instructor at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, USA, conducted a workshop for English language teachers.   Jerrold brought up the issue of Bridging Cultures through Teaching and Learning Languages. Every culture is an iceberg, and EFL teachers should not only teach the upper part of it, but raise awareness of the cultural elements which hide behind water, like manners or gender relationships. Chrystal highlighted the benefits of using Photography in ELT. Some unusual activities like taking a selfie and describing it to your peer may become very engaging for students engulfed into the world of technology.
They also met and interviewed teachers who participated in some training programs supported by the US Embassy. The English Language Office (ELO) are planning to make a film devoted to Jerrold’s ELT Trans-Siberian Railway journey during which he had a chance to hear Russian EFL teachers’ voices about the impact of the English Language Programs supported by the ELO. Here is the link to the film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM5sHbdlFkg
In general, the visit was very short, but efficient. We hope to continue our fruitful collaboration with the ELO.
