A Center tutor participates in a training course on academic writing

From October 2016 to April 2017, Irina Belyakova, the Center tutor, was enrolled in an online course on academic writing "Understanding Research and Academic Writing." The course was provided on the grant basis by the English Language Office at the US Embassy in Moscow. The author of the course is Ivan Eubanks, assistant professor of the Department of English Language and Literature, University College of the Cayman Islands. The course consisted of a series of monthly webinars and practical workshops. The topics of the webinars included: compiling an annotated bibliography and outline for a manuscript, writing and editing/peer reviewing an introduction and an abstract, describing the main parts of the research, including methods and results, and writing a conclusion.

Throughout the course, all the participants from different countries were involved in peer reviewing / editing each other's manuscripts. For each webinar, it was necessary to read, edit and write a review of the work of any two participants (the distribution of works for review was random). It was a very laborious, but also an interesting task. During these six months, Irina got an opportunity to get acquainted with research in literature, linguistics, and methodology in our country and abroad.

Some assignments concerned the rules of setting and formulating the problem, tasks, arguments, and evidence. Particular attention was paid to the structure of both the whole article and each paragraph. In addition, the participants discussed the process of selecting a relevant journal for the publication of research.

In general, the course is very dynamic and intensive, with clear deadlines and an evaluation system. It stimulates scientific activity.
