Writing is the best way to talk without being interrupted.
Writing is thinking on paper.
When writing about science, don't simplify the science; simplify the writing.
Writing is a lot easier if you have something to say.
Good writing is clear thinking made visible.
A man who is ignorant of foreign languages is also ignorant of his own language.
Only the educated are free.
One`s work may be finished someday, but one`s education never.
What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul.
Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.
Tyumen researchers participated in British Council workshop “Researcher Connect”
On February 26-28, the Center hosted a special event – British Council workshop “Researcher Connect.” It is the second time this program funded by the British Council has taken place in Tyumen. The name of the program is very symbolic: it implies collaboration of researchers; that is why the program connected researchers from different educational establishments: the University of Tyumen, Tyumen Industrial University, Northern Trans-Ural State Agricultural University. The trainer was Andrew Halfacre, one of the most experienced trainers of the British Council. The workshop covered the following topics: abstracts development, presenting with impact, and academic collaboration.
Three days were full of engaging activities that developed communication, presentation, and writing skills. The researchers took full advantage of the workshop and managed to strengthen the ties with each other. By the end of the three days, they felt more confident about communicating their research internationally.
The researchers shared their feedback on the workshop:
Tair Esenbaev, Junior Researcher, The Research Laboratory of Photonics and Microfluidics, University of Tyumen
First, I would like to thank British Council Russia and Center for Academic Writing “Impulse” for organising the course “Researcher Connect” here at the University of Tyumen. I truly believe that the course has helped our researchers to develop their professional competence in writing abstracts, presenting with impact and academic collaboration. There was a lot of practice for each module so that we had a chance to learn everything by doing and not just by listening. We were also working in groups and this was useful for developing skills of group work and academic collaboration. The studying process went smoothly and was well organised thanks to the colleagues from “Impulse.” As a researcher myself I really appreciate this opportunity to develop my professional competence and I do hope that this and other courses of British Council will take place in Tyumen again!
Nikolay Kubochkin, Junior Researcher, The Research Laboratory of Photonics and Microfluidics, University of Tyumen
I would like to thank British Council and the team of Center “Impulse” of Tyumen State University for providing a great opportunity to participate in a workshop “Researcher Connect” focusing on development of scientific writing and communication skills.
This course was informative and essentially expanded my understanding of peculiarities every researcher faces, highlighted mistakes researcher can do and ways to avoid such mistakes.
It is worthwhile to note non-typical teaching techniques used – working in small groups as well as brainstorming are happened to be very effective.
Thank you!
I do hope the third “Researcher Connect” will take place next year and look forward to it.
Denis V. Sharapov, Postdoctoral Researcher, International Laboratory of Climate Change, Land Use, and Biodiversity, University of Tyumen
This class is useful for any academic, especially for those in the early stages of their career. The exercises were all 'hands-on' and the learning process was fun. I recommend this class to all of my Russian colleagues.
Elena Arbatskaya, Teacher and Researcher, School of Advanced Studies, University of Tyumen
Our coach managed to keep us in a state of flux for all three days. I did not notice how time flies. I was learning not only academic communication but how to teach.
