Writing Meetup as a tool to awaken creative impulses

A new event at the CAWI was organized for those who would like to take up writing, to share ideas, & to be inspired. On July 3-4 2019, Writing Meetup took place, engaging the participants into practical exercises along the way.

The participants got familiar with various pre-writing techniques, such as clustering, cubing, and looping.  Sharing their own ideas and experiences was one of the most valuable moments during the meeting. They researchers could comment on each other’s pieces of writing and provide constructive critique focusing on some strengths and areas for improvement.

The participants had the opportunity to think rhetorically about their pieces of writing, in other words, they became aware of writing to an audience for a purpose within a genre. Despite the fact that writing is usually serious work, the participants had some fun.

The first Writing Meetup was successful at awakening creative impulses in both the participants and organizers. It will eventually become a permanent event of the CAWI.

The participants’ feedback:

Eugenia Abysheva:

“Thank you for such a wonderful seminar! I could never imagine that two days might be enough to create the model of the article. We were shown brilliant writing techniques, which I am going to use preparing an article. I was surprised to understand that six key verbs are necessary to keep in mind: describe, associate, compare, argue for/against, analyze, apply.”

Anastasia Ljovkina:

“Very unusual and productive form of a masterclass of academic writing. New techniques make you think deeply and differently about your initial writing idea. Fun conversations and gaming style methods enable you to relax and open creative writing potential. Thank you very much for this event.”

Elena Arbatskaya:

“It’s always a great pleasure to participate in events organized by “Impulse”. This one was important for me because tomorrow, the next day after the workshop I have a deadline for an abstract. The workshop helped me to clarify my ideas and find ‘formulas’ for them.”

Alexey Prokhoshin:

"Writing Meetup is a great opportunity for those who want to start or continue writing scientific articles. We practiced useful techniques like clustering, cubing, looping and others.Especially I want to mention a friendly atmosphere, the effective format of the meetup and high professional level of Valeria."

Dmitriy Kirillov:

“It was a nice time for me. I have got a lot of skills in English writing. I understood that I have to learn English daily. Valeria Evdash gave us a strong impulse for finding our professional success in foreign journals publishing. I will use the cubing approach with my Russian students in the future.”

Egene Karagulyan:
